It holds a comprehensive collection of Southern Africa’s musical heritage, including:
- Sheet music provided by SAMRO Members or works commissioned by SAMRO
- Audio-visual material including vinyls, cassette tapes, video cassettes, DVD’s and CDs.
- Research material including books, journals, articles, newspaper cuttings/clips, as well as publications.
SAMRO Scores
SAMRO Music Archive is the online portal for digitised sheet-music from the SAMRO Music Archive and SAMRO Members. The initiative was started in 2018 to promote and encourage the performance of South African music around the world, and is driven by a cost-effective philosophy of ‘digitisation by demand’.
Indigenous African Music (IAM) Transcription Project
The Indigenous African Music (IAM) Transcription Project aims to preserve, protect and promote the valuable but neglected cultural heritage that exists in Africa. There is an urgency for the preservation of IAM; there is a demand for its documentation; and there is an opportunity to promote IAM in education and broader society. In order to document and promote the indigenous practices and practitioners, the SAMRO CSI is in the process of collating and notating a selection of available materials in such a way that IAM will become accessible for local and international study, analysis and practice.

In 2021 SAMRO CSI rolled out two pilot projects with SAMRO’s members in mind – The Music Creation Support Fund and bursaries for the Music Business Short Learning Course at Boston City Campus.
